The service 1998 – present
"My Council initiated an in-house staff sickness scheme for schools as a means to enable them to plan their budgets for the financial year. Were a staff member(s) to be taken ill and be on sick leave for an extended period, it would be necessary to recruit a replacement
teacher(s) at short notice. The increase in expenditure on teaching staff could have recriminations for the school were such a financial provision not budgeted for. The obvious being that spending on facilities or projects earmarked for students may have to be shelved. Our scheme is non-profit making and premiums collected are ploughed back into the scheme fund.
“The scheme is administered by BEST on behalf of the Council. The benefits to this are that claims are seen as being dealt with by an established independent professional body. Schools find that the method of claim submission, via e-mail, to be quick and simple. Concise answers are given to enquiries which enable claims to proceed smoothly.
"Another benefit is that BEST are able to advise the Council on policy changes being implemented by the private sector, and so enabling the Council to offer the same, or similar, benefits to our schools. In addition to this, the Council found that it was financially viable to outsource the administration of the scheme.”
