It provides a layer of protection above the staff absence budget, helping to avoid overspend. The scheme pays a cash benefit once the level of absence exceeds the predicted level. The scheme has a flexible choice of benefits, with a choice of categories of staff and an excess to suit individual needs. There is no requirement to engage supply staff.
